A mountain lion is spotted in the Stetson Hills area putting one neighborhood on edge Sunday evening. It was spotted Saturday in the backyard of a home on La Plata Peak Drive near Powers and Stetson Hills Boulevard.
The Division of Wildlife let the cat stay at the house overnight because it was too dark to tranquilize it. When the D.O.W returned Sunday morning, the cat was already gone.
But, before running away, the cat left behind its mark. It swiped its paw at Helen Elliott's dog, forcing him to get stitches on his leg and scraping his nose. “He let out a hiss at him and that’s when I knew the mountain lion was in my backyard,” Elliott said.
The D.O.W. said it's odd to find a mountain lion in a neighborhood like this. They suspect he's a young cat looking for a place to call home, but these residents don’t want him as a neighbor. And now the entire neighborhood waits to see if the cat will return to make a home for himself in Stetson Hills. “I don’t know how he got here or how he left,” neighbor Kevin Wade said.
The D.O.W said they'll be keeping an eye on the neighborhood. They think the young cat may have come from the Black Forest area.
If you ever encounter a mountain lion, never turn away and run. Back away slowly and make yourself look bigger, by raising your arms or opening your jacket. Also, keep your children close to you.
