The Colorado Springs City Council has come up with a process for selecting a replacement for Charles Wingate, who resigned his position on Tuesday.

Under the rules of the City Charter, a replacement must be selected within 30 days.

Interested candidates must live in Council District 2, on the city's northeast side. It is bounded on the west by Academy Blvd. and on the south by Constitution Ave. and South Carefree.

Applicants are asked to submit the following information to the Mayor's office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, 2003.

  • A cover letter outlining why he or she is interested in becoming a City Councilmember
  • A resume highlighting community activities, memberships on boards and commissions, leadership roles, work history and education

Applicants have several ways to submit information:

    Fax to:
    M. Devine
    385-5495

    Email to:
    mdevine@ci.colospgs.co.us

    Regular mail or drop-off applications:
    107 N. Nevada
    Colorado Springs, CO 80903

The City Council will review the applications and, based on the number of qualified applicants, narrow the field to fhree or four candidates to interview. Those interviews will be conducted the first week of June. And the council plans to announce a replacement candidate at the June 9th informal council meeting.

According to the City Charter, applicants must also meet these minimum qualifications to hold a City Council seat:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be at least 25 years old at the time of swearing in
  • Must have been a Colorado Springs resident for at least one year
  • Upon taking the oath of office, must reside in District 2

The replacement councilmember will serve the remainder of Wingate's term, which is about 22 months.
