I-25 & Woodmen Construction

Construction at Colorado Springs' most dangerous interchange could soon be back on track. The Colorado Department of Transportation says the project to expand the interchange was delayed when the prime contractor stopped paying workers.

An agreement Wednesday could have the workers back at work as early as Friday. But they may have to double their pace to make up for lost time.

Five weeks ago, suppliers and workers walked off the job because of the situation. Today, prime contractor Centric Jones and its bonding company agreed to make $1.2 million in back payments. CDOT hopes that money will satisfy the suppliers and the workers. If not, CDOT will have to hire a new contractor to get the job done.

Because of the ongoing construction, the I-25 and Woodmen interchange is one of the most accident prone in the city. More than 350 car accidents have happened there since construction began in January of 2001.

Originally the interchange project at I-25 and Woodmen was scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
