TV Helicopter Crash

By: AP
Updated: Fri 8:57 AM, May 09, 2003

The helicopter is leased by Denver's KMGH--TV, Channel 7.

It is owned by Helicopters Incorporated of Arapahoe County.

A helicopter company employee is being treated for minor injuries at a Denver-area hospital. His name has not been released.

KMGH Managing Editor Dave Green says the other two people on the helicopter were pilot Rich Westra and TV cameraman Ron Orndoff.

Green says the pilot and both of his passengers walked away from the crash scene. He says the pilot reported the chopper went down due to engine failure.

The helicopter was flying over the plains east of Denver so the cameraman could get shots of a funnel cloud and hail that hit the region today. But the station spokesman says the crash was not weather-related. He says everyone at KMGH is just relieved that part of their family is o.k., even though they had a big scare.
