Firing Hurting Local Economy

The Mato Vega fire isn't just affecting the burn area anymore.

The small towns of La Veta and Cuchara rely heavily on summer tourism, and the continued closure of Highway 160 may be hurting business.

The road remains closed from Fort Garland to the junction of Highway 12.

Several business owners have seen a drop-off in the past few days and hotel managers are reporting a few canceled reservations.

Many people are concerned that the highway closure goes all the way to Walsenburg, which isn't the case.

There is no timetable as to when Highway 160 will reopen, the fire is still only 30% contained.
