United Airlines won contract concessions from the last of its employee unions Wednesday, ensuring 2.56 billion dollars in annual savings to the bankrupt carrier.
After a morning announcement that the mechanics and ground
workers ratified their contracts, United went to federal bankruptcy
court to make the changes official.
Judge Eugene Wedoff approved the wage and benefit concessions,
improving the airline's chance of reorganizing and coming out of
bankruptcy.
Pilots union president Paul Whiteford says the judge's approval
is a big step toward recovery. Pilots took a 30 percent pay cut.
CEO Glenn Tilton told employees the concession send a message
that the company is serious about regaining financial stability.
United is the largest carrier at Denver International Airport.
