Less than a week after John McCain was endorsed by the National Rifle Association, Barack Obama is being backed by a major antigun group.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says Obama and running mate Joe Biden would strengthen background checks on gun purchasers, get assault weapons off the streets, and give law enforcement more tools to stop illegal gun trafficking.
A spokesman for the group criticized McCain for once leading on gun violence prevention issues, but then allegedly pandering to the gun lobby.
The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is named after James Brady, the former White House press secretary who was gravely wounded during the attempt on Ronald Reagan's life in 1981.
