One man is dead, and another has been critically hurt, after a balloon slammed into power lines during the annual hot air balloon fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Witnesses say the impact set off an explosion that sent burning debris flying as the balloon disintegrated.

A spokeswoman for the balloon festival says it's not clear whether it was the pilot or the passenger who was killed when the balloon crashed just north of Albuquerque.

Authorities say the injured person was found unconscious at the scene, and is hospitalized in critical condition.

One man says he saw the balloon land, then bounce back up and apparently hit some power lines.

He saw the balloon portion float away without the basket, and then heard the balloon's propane tanks hit the ground.
