Avalanches this winter claimed six lives and injured another 13 people in Colorado. 2,372 avalanches were reported and a total of 84 people were caught in them this season. That's according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which monitors conditions and issues avalanche warnings each year.
The center this week issued its last warning of the season and shutdown until it opens up next winter. Dal Atkins is a weather and avalanche forecaster at the center. Atkins says the avalanche danger still exists in the mountains. He says there will be areas with fine snow for skiing, snowboarding, climbing and snowmobiling that will last into June in higher elevations.
