A follow up to a story CBS news first reported late last month. Colorado is among six states charged with illegally taking voters off the books. State officials say these reports are inaccurate.

In a recent CBS exclusive, the non-partisan Brennan Center for Justice called the method of updating voter rolls chaotic, accusing election officials across the country of making errors in removing those who have moved, died, or committed a felony.

"We don't know all the problems but we know that there's a huge potential for partisan mischief," said Michael Waldman, spokesperson for Brennan Center for Justice.

A New York Times article claims more than 30,000 voters have been illegally pulled from Colorado's books.

"A lot of these reports are pretty out to lunch," said Secretary of State Mike Coffman in a news conference Thursday.

The official total of canceled voters, according to Coffman's office, is about 23,000 less, just over 14,000.

"The issue is the 2,400 voters from August first to October 9th we're looking at right now," said SCORE Administrator William Browning.

Approximately 2,400 duplicate registrations have been pulled, but may be re-instated if attorneys say canceling them violates federal law.

"We feel very strongly each citizen should get one ballot for this election and only vote one ballot," Browning said.

El Paso County election officials told 11 News Thursday they're conducting business as usual, and open to any questions and concerns from local voters.

In the event a Colorado voter's been wrongly listed as canceled, a provisional ballot can be cast on election day. Those ballots will be counted if the voter is found to be eligible.
