COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is asking for an exemption from the state freeze on construction so it can finish a $56 million science and engineering building.
University officials said Tuesday the project is already 60 percent complete and that the school is paying nearly two-thirds of the cost, with the state contributing $20 million.
Gov. Bill Ritter ordered a freeze on state construction and hiring two weeks ago, citing the uncertain economic outlook.
University spokesman Tom Hutton says UCCS officials are in discussions with Ritter's office.
University officials say work is continuing on the building, and they're optimistic they will get an exemption from Ritter.
