The U.S. military says an American soldier was fatally wounded during a firefight at a house in northern Iraq.
The military says U.S. forces were responding to a report that an al-Qaida member with a suicide vest was inside. An Iraqi policeman and a militant were also killed in the fighting, which ended when U.S. aircraft destroyed the building.
Elsewhere in Mosul, Iraqi officials say a suicide car bomber targeted a U.S. military patrol. One Iraqi civilian was killed and 10 others were injured. A U.S. spokesman says three American soldiers were hurt.
And in Baghdad Tuesday, two car bombs exploded in a parking lot near Iraq's Foreign Ministry. The bombings came while U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte is visiting the Iraqi capital for meetings.
