Colorado Springs Utilities customers could pay more to heat their home this winter.

The utility company is proposing a 23% rate increase to Colorado Springs City Council in December.

If they approve it, the rate increase would take effect February 1, 2009.

"That means the cost of water, waste water, gas and electric is going up for typical residential customers," said Jerry Forte, CEO of Colorado Springs Utilities.

The biggest factor for water and waste water is a decrease in revenue because of a drop in building permit requests.

With gas and electric, the cost of coal and natural gas is going up.

Residents will get a chance to comment about the proposed rate increase. Springs' Utilities will hold a public hearing in January, before city council votes on the proposal.

It's a given, Colorado Springs City Council will increase the utilities rate with or without citizen approval. However instead of threatening fiscal disaster unless more taxes are raised increasing taxes on everything possible everytime they can perhaps our wise council should solve the fiscal disaster they threaten us with by acting responsibly when it counts. Such as Instead of rejecting bids by major employers, such as Boeing and Texas Instruments who ask for small incentives the council would rather attempt underhanded revenue increases such stormwater project WITHOUT voter approval. Therefore why would City Council do anything different this time?
