Do you have a fire escape plan? How well do your kids know the plan? Saturday parents in Colorado Springs were given an opportunity to make or go over a disaster plan.
It's an annual event put on by the Colorado Springs Fire Department. This year the event was held at Fire Station 19. More than 1,000 people showed up. Fire Officials hold the event in a different neighborhood every year to give different residents the opportunity to participate.
The event is for kids and adults. Firefighters made it kid friendly by handing out bags of goodies, and made it adult friendly by telling them the importance and seriousness of having an evacuation plan.
It's been one week since the deadly fire on the North side of Colorado Springs killed a woman. It was the fire that broke out in the middle of the night on Rockrimmon Blvd near Delmonico Dr.
The first week of October is Fire Prevention Week. The next 7-days means dedication to education. "To prevent home fires, that's this year's theme," said Brianna Goodwin who is a Life Safety Educator with the Colorado Springs Fire Department.
Goodwin says the one-day event is helping to get that message across.
"Check your batteries," said Jessica Medina who is a mother of four.
Medina says she taught her children the evacuation plan a while back, but that they and even she needs to be reminded. "They don't always remember those things," said Medina.
The rules are simple. If an alarm is going off and there's thick smoke in the room, that means move it. "Get on my hands and knees, go to one of the escape routes and go to our meeting place," said Nicholas Branch who learned many fire safety tips at the event.
Sparky the Fire Dog also helped encourage kids to learn some lessons including how to perform CPR and how to dial 911.
And the lessons didn't stay indoors. "We learned how to cut the roof off a car," said Martin Willis who came to the event with his little brother.
The Fire Department put real victims inside the car and cut the car open as if they were in a real situation.
"The kids really thought it was realistic," said Medina.
"The helicopter was sweet," said Branch.
The car extrication and the helicopter were the two main attractions.
"Every year it definitely gets bigger and better," said Goodwin.
If you're interested in learning more, don't worry, you haven't missed out.
In the evening hours Tuesday through Friday each night at a different Red Robin, a safety class will be held.
