Police are considering charges against one or both parents of a 3-year-old boy after he was shot in the foot with a semi-automatic handgun.
Both parents are reportedly cooperating with the investigation.
According to Fountain police, the child was in his parents' bedroom at their home on Turf Trail Place Wednesday morning when he found a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun. The gun went off and hit the boy in the foot.
The boy's mother was home when it happened, but did not see the boy get the gun.
He was taken to a nearby hospital and was in surgery most of the day.
Neighbors tell 11 News that the boy's father is a Fort Carson soldier, and that he returned from Afghanistan last month.
Along with police, the Department of Human Services is investigating the incident. Police have not said whether they are considering charges against just the mother, or both parents. It could be a week or more before any charges are determined.
Police say they encourage gun owners to always use a trigger lock, gun safe or similar device to keep their weapons away from kids. The Fountain Police Department will provide hand gun locks to anyone who requests one.
