Douglas County officials are handing out flood information to home owners in the Hayman and Schoonover burn areas. The outreach effort began in March and will continue through summer.

Homeowners are worried they might not be able to leave their
homes for days if access roads are flooded. Many are preparing for
worst case scenarios.

Douglas County officials say they are trying to get ahead of the
flooding season by contacting homeowners early. They are advising anyone living in areas devastated by wildfires to prepare in advance for the possibility of flash floods.

The county says there are about 160 homes in the Hayman Fire's 138,000 acre burn area that are at the highest risk.

Colorado's flash flood season runs from June through August.

Last summer's wildfires burned away much of the undergrowth that
normally would slow flooding.
