Wildfire Preparations

Wildfire the 2003 Season
By  |

Gov. Bill Owens says despite the huge March blizzard, some three-fourths of the state is still under extreme drought conditions.

As such the governor has authorized about $1.6 million in state disaster emergency funds to pay for wildfire preparation this summer.

During a press conference today Owens said Colorado is ready to respond when a wildfire strikes this spring or this summer.

The emergency plan calls for three small air tankers and ten new fire engines that will be pre-positioned at strategic sites around Colorado to quickly respond to wildfires.

Federal land management officials say fire risk remains high across much of Colorado after three years of drought.

Colorado's wildfire season is expected to start by late June or early July this year. That compares with an April start last year.
