Fremont County authorities are investigating whether a jail inmate who escaped from a hospital Sunday night had a handcuff key.

Roger Zaragoza, age 23, was being treated for a swollen hand after he hit a wall in his cell. Investigators had said Zaragoza freed himself from his restraints and escaped. But Sheriff Jim Biecker says it's obvious Zaragoza had access to a handcuff key.

Biecker is also promising an investigation into why the inmate was left in the emergency room unattended by deputies. Zaragoza had been handcuffed to a railing with only a hospital security guard watching him.

Zaragoza was recaptured Monday about 12 hours after his escape. He'd been held since February on attempted first-degree murder and weapons charges.
