State Patrol Chief Retires

Fifty five year old Lonnie Westphal has headed the State Patrol since 1995. He joined the patrol in 1974 as a trooper, and worked his way through the ranks.

Westphal was only the sixth chief in the agency's 68 year history.

He says he's proud that the pay for troopers increased during his time as chief and that a hundred new patrol officers were added.

Still, Westphal says Colorado could use another 160 troopers because of the growth in population.

He's not sure what he'll do now but doesn't expect to remain in
law enforcement.
