Additional War Spending Approved

The House has given final congressional approval to a wartime spending bill of nearly $80 billion. The fast-track legislation also contains funds to combat terrorism, boost defenses at home and give new aid to airlines.

The Senate approved the package last night.

President Bush is expected to sign it into law quickly.

The bill passed by voice votes in the House and Senate prior to
a two week Easter recess. Both chambers were nearly empty at the
time of the votes.

Almost $63 billion will pay for the Pentagon costs of the Iraq invasion and battles elsewhere against terrorism.

Lawmakers are granting Bush little of the independence he asked
for in deciding how the money would be spent.
