Federal defense contracts have helped buoy many Colorado businesses during the collapse of the high tech sector.
That's according to analysts who say Colorado ranked 17th in defense contract income. In 2002, Colorado earned an estimated $2.6 billion dollars from contracts.
Lockheed Martin is number one in the state for contracted defense work. Most recently, the company produced a missile that boosted a military satellite into space. A Grand Junction firm built bomb fins.
Colorado's portion was just a fraction of the $170.8 billion in defense contracts during the fiscal year that ended in September.
