A popular hiking trail near Eldorado Springs has been closed after a black bear charged a park ranger there.
Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Ranger Pete Taylor says he was responding to a report of a bear in the area on Tuesday.
That's when he says the 252-pound bear ran at him at full speed and then stopped within ten yards of him.
Taylor says the bear may have been trying to protect cubs or a deer it was eating.
The Big Bluestem Trail in south Boulder will remain closed through today.
Rangers plan to see if the bear is still in the area before deciding to reopen the trail.
The area around the trail is a popular place for bears looking for berries to eat in the late summer and early fall, but there are no berries there now.
