Despite the war in Iraq and an ongoing investigation in to allegations of sexual assault, the number of people seeking appointment to the Air Force Academy is on the rise.
The academy has received nearly 11,000 applications this year. That’s about 7 percent more than last year. Officials say the Class of 2007 will be one of the most competitive and select in the Academy’s history.
An investigation began at the academy after a number of sexual assaults were reported by female cadets at the academy. The reports have prompted changes in leadership at the school as well as changes in culture including the removal of a sign reading, “Bring Me Men.” The way male and female cadets are housed is also changing. And a woman has been appointed to head the academy for the first time in it’s history.
