Several schools in D20 and D38 were on modified lockdown due to a search for a possible kidnapping suspect in the area.

Eight schools in D20 were on modified lockdown Friday. These schools included TCA North, da Vinci Academy, Discovery Canyon Campus and Antelope trails, Pine Creek, Challenger, Mountain View and TCA Central.

D38 had nine schools under these restrictions- Grace Best, Palmer Lake, Lewis Palmer Elementary, Middle and High Schools, Prairie Winds, Kilmer, Creek Side, and Palmer Ridge.

D49 was also on a modifed lockdown for part of their school day. There were no schools in District 11 on lockdown status.

Modified lockdown means students were in school but had to stay inside building, people who had business at the school were asked to show ID, entrances to schools were controlled, which means if the school usually has four entrances, they only had one open to the public. Staff were cognizant and were briefed on the situation and reviewed safety procedures with school district security officials.

The Rampart Range Campus of Pikes Peak Community College was on lockdown for part of the day but that has been changed to restricted access. Entry to the building can be made from the main entrance only. All classes have resumed, and Child Development Center parents may pick up their children at their normal times. Officers will be patrolling inside and outside the facility. Parents were allowed to pick up their children at the Rampart Child Development Center.

Parents from District 20 received an e-mail like this:
As you may know via the media, this morning Police were searching for a kidnapping suspect in the northern area of our school district. On the advice of the Colorado Springs Police Department, working with District 20 Security and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, several schools were initially placed on "limited access" early this morning. Pine Creek and others in our area were added to that list later in the morning. This meant that we did not allow any students to leave the school and limited access to the school to parents. By 10:00am, we were informed by the police and District 20 Security that the suspect was no longer in this area or a threat to our students and that we could return to business as usual.

We know that this was of great concern in our community and want to assure you that the situation was being closely monitored, and we were in constant communication with the police through our School Resource Officer and Security.

The safety of students and staff at Pine Creek High School was the number one priority in making decisions. Your students were wonderful and responded very calmly and appropriately to the situation. If you have any questions or concerns about this specific situation, or about school security in the District or school in general, please consider attending the Building Accountability Advisory Meeting on Monday evening, September 15th, from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the Pine Creek Library. Mr. Larry Borland, District 20 Director of Security, will be the guest speaker.
