West Nile Virus

The first birds in line to get the vaccine at the Pueblo Zoo were the African Crowned Cranes. The miniature horses and donkey received booster shots.

Last year, a golden eagle at the Pueblo Zoo contracted the disease. In the second year of the Virus, there are usually more cases. Veterinarians say it's just too dangerous to wait and see how the disease could affect other zoo animals.

The West Nile Virus is a mosquito born illness that can kill horses and even people.
