An Arizona animal-rescue group is helping treat dozens of beagles from a large Missouri puppy mill.

Colorado-based Mill Dog Rescue Network made a deal with the puppy mill owner to take 100 dogs. If they hadn't been rescued, officials say they would have been shot or drowned.

The puppy mill had been warned about its dogs and by law, needed to get rid of them.

Twenty-eight of the beagles are now in the care of Arizona Beagle Rescue.

Beagle Rescue officials say the dogs have medical problems caused by neglect and abuse. The dogs, which before were sleeping on wire, now have pillows and blankets.

Puppy mills breed dogs in mostly inhumane conditions and sell them to pet stores.

They only rescued 28? When are they going to take the rest of them before the nuts shoot or drown them?

Actually Greg, Petco and Petsmart do not "sell" dogs and cats that come from breeders. They only let rescue groups come to adopt out animals and the cats that are there for adoption are not expensive cats, usually not even kittens. The stores that buy and sell these dogs are the smaller places like Pet City in the malls. They charge astronomical amounts for all of their pets, as you can see by the large number of half-grown puppies in their cages. These are the stores that need to be shut down for encouraging the breeders. Do your research and either rescue a pet from the pound or make sure you buy from a reputable breeder!

Do not allow the posting to stand that implicates PetCo and PetSamrt with the selling of pets.... Only "puppy mill puppies," adopted from these two stores HAVE BEEN RESCUED from the puppy mills.

Greg, PetCo and PetSmart in Ga., work with Rescue and Humane shelters to get dogs adopted and saved from being euthenized.. it is the pet stores at the malls you are thinking about....

This is soo sad. Why do People treat Animals this Way? Tougher Laws need to be put in Place against Animal Cruelty/ Puppy Mills so People like that think twice about abusing Animals. It should be a Felony with a hefty Fine for All those Puppymills who are only this for the Money, but dont care how those poor Puppys live in those awful Conditions.

I think even with tougher laws, the money is too good from selling these puppies to the pet 'box stores'. Until people refuse to buy a pet from places like Petco, PetSmart and the like, someone will being willing to take the chance and make a bundle of money. But buying from a reputable breeder probably costs more, so in the end, it's consumers who drive this behavior.

Why are the laws not tougher for these abusers? Aren't people tired of seeing this? Let these people that do this be treted the way they treat these animals.
