Hurricane Ike is pounding Cuba after making landfall late Sunday night with 120 mile-per-hour winds.
Earlier, a much stronger Ike killed nearly 60 people in Haiti.

Cuban state television is showing images of the storm surge washing over coastal homes in the eastern city of Baracoa and reporting that dozens are damaged beyond repair.

Reports from provinces in eastern Cuba suggest that well over half a million people have moved to safer ground.

Ike is forecast to hit Havana before it moves into the Gulf of Mexico early Tuesday where it could be felt in the Florida Keys. Later in the week it could make landfall between the Florida Panhandle and Texas.

Officials in Louisiana are concerned that people who've just returned home after moving away from Hurricane Gustav will not be inclined to leave again if asked to.
