A 12-year-old hit by a car is recovering in a hospital; his mom is now calling for changes to make the area where they live safer.
The accident happened near Sand Creek Elementary on Airport Road where there is no crosswalk and no school zone and that's because Airport Road is the district boundary between District-11 and District-2 and so kids shouldn't have to cross the road. But 12-year-old Darius Irving’s mother says, bottom line, with a school nearby this area needs to be safer.
Darius has his left leg in a cast, his forehead is pretty scratched up, but he’s in good spirits, he's just thankful to be alive.
"This gray car just rammed into me," Darius said.
A 7th grader at Panorama Middle school, Darius was on his way to his bus stop, which is across a busy Airport Road at Sandcreek Elementary. He says he crossed the street and next thing he knew he was lying on the ground.
"I remember the ambulance came and got me up," Darius said.
He had to undergo surgery for a badly broken leg.
"I was so scared," said his mother, Teresa Washington.
She is just glad his injuries weren't worse.
"He's very lucky to be alive, he was in the middle of the street, halfway across Airport," Teresa said.
A street that Teresa says needs some changes.
"There's no crossing guard or crosswalk across Airport where it's incredibly busy," Teresa said.
A District-2 spokesperson says the reason there is no crosswalk or school zone here is because Airport Road is the district boundary. Darius is a D-2 student who actually lives in District-11, but his mom says with the ongoing development happening here, many kids cross this street everyday.
"Lots of kids cross over to go to the park, playground, to school," Teresa said.
And she doesn't want any other parent to go through what she and her son have.
Police say the woman who hit Darius was not speeding, but the speed limit is 45 mph. She was not cited.
