While America has been getting to know Sarah Palin, more and more are learning that her youngest son, 4-and-a-half month old, Trig. He was born with Down syndrome.

With her recent announcement as John McCain's running mate, it's brought the condition to the spotlight.

All pregnant woman, now, are offered prenatal screenings for Down Syndrome. That's how Sarah Palin learned ahead of time that Trig had the condition and that’s how a mother in Monument learned about her son.

Suzanne and Jim Faber have 4 kids. Alex, their 6-year-old, is the one who runs the house, the parents joked. "He’s so mischievous and makes you laugh at the same time," said Suzanne Faber.

She and her husband knew early on in the pregnancy that Alex had Down Syndrome, which is estimated at one in every 800 births.

“Down Syndrome is a third copy of the 21st chromosome," said Julie Harmon with the Colorado Springs Down Syndrome Association. She’s a mother of two with the same condition and says there are resources out there to help parents with developmentally disabled children, which is how she met the Fabers.

"We're only given things in life that we can handle. Yes, we were worried and concerned with Alex, but we’re truly blessed. We have an angel in our house," said Jim Faber.

"There are more challenges with a kid with Down syndrome, but we’re rewarded way more than with the work we put in," said Suzanne.
