An early morning house fire in north Colorado Springs sent one person to the hospital.

Springs fire officials say the fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. Thursday at 8960 Boxelder Drive. That's near Research Parkway and Rangewood.

When firefighters arrived they found thick, black smoke coming from the 2-story home. As they went inside, the fre spread quickly. They pulled back and called in extra crews to help.

Firefighters searched the home, but found no one inside. No one who lived there was on scene, either.

They later learned one burn victim, a 40-year-old male had arrived at a local hospital in critical condition, and was taken to a burn center in Denver.

The Springs Fire Department calls the damage to the home "major" and says the home is uninhabitable. Red Cross is helping out.

Colorado Springs Fire Investigators announced Thursday evening that the fire was accidental.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.
