BOSTON (AP) -- New research suggests that video games are not only fun but can actually enhance certain mental and physical abilities.

Researchers gathered in Boston for the American Psychological Association convention are detailing a series of studies suggesting video games can be powerful learning tools. The benefits range from increasing younger students' problem-solving potential to improving the suturing skills of laparoscopic surgeons.

One study even found that "World of Warcraft," the world's biggest multiplayer online game, appears to sharpen scientific thinking skills.

But the news isn't all good. Other studies confirm earlier research that found students who play violent games tend to be more hostile. And those who play more entertainment games do poorer in school and have a greater risk of obesity.
