A major roadway in Colorado Springs was on the verge of washing out. That's thanks to all the rain we got Friday night and Saturday morning.

Woodmen Road between Black Forest Road and Marksheffel Road will be closed until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday while engineers figure out a way to make sure the road doesn't cave in.

"It's been raining all morning," said Sgt. Gary Fraiser with the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The unstoppable flow of rain water prompted state, city and county officials to shut down Woodmen Road. It was too risky otherwise.

"It's enough to cause some damage downstream if it was to release suddenly," said Bill McCormick, State Dam Safety Engineer.

McCormick is talking about the detention pond that sits right next to Woodmen Rd on the North side of the street.

"Mother nature. We don't know what she's going to do," said McCormick.

If Colorado Springs were to get another substantial down-pour of rain it could cause some serious damage. "Even more rain would under-mind the roadway itself and collapse the road," said Sgt. Fraiser.

Crews were called out on Saturday to control the amount of water splashing down-hill and through a culvert that runs underneath Woodmen Road. Too much water flow could cause the culvert to bust.

"There's a culvert system that goes under this new Woodmen Road and that's sort of the constriction point. There's a culvert down there that can't really handle all this flow," said McCormick.

"We've got a lot of water back here," said Sandy Gee. She lives just a few hundred feet away from the problem area on Woodmen Road.

"We're worried that it's going to go up and hit the properties," said Gee.

Homes could be destroyed if the road were to get washed out. All of that water would head straight for the homes in that area.

"We all wanted the rain and we got it. Now we're going to wait and see what happens," said Gee.

The rain is usually welcomed with open arms in Southern Colorado, but when too much comes down too fast it could be disastrous.

There are several dams along the drainage system near Woodmen Road. The problem on Saturday is that the dam that controls the detention pond in that area isn't fully constructed yet.

The Mountain Springs Church will have service as scheduled Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. You can still access the church by using Stetson Hills and Marksheffel Road.

TESSA's Pasta in the Park has been canceled on Saturday because of the weather. The event was scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Myron Stratton Home Campus.

There's a reason why Gen. Palmer didn't build the city that far east and north. There's also a reason why it's so cheap to buy a house out there.

First the city can't handle the snow. Now they can't handle the rain or the crime. What's next?
