A six year old girl is dead and her mother and two year old brother are injured after a bear attacked a family at a camp site in Tennessee.
The attack Thursday took place in the Cherokee National Forest.
Several witnesses say the bear grabbed the boy in its mouth as the mother and other visitors fought it off with sticks and rocks.
At some point the animal dropped the boy but he is reportedly in critical condition.
According to authorities, the girl ran away from the scene during the attack but her body was later found about 100 yards away with what officials say was the same bear standing over her.
A rescue worker fired at least one gunshot at the bear before it ran away.
Forest service workers, game agents and trackers are searching for it.
The mother and the boy were taken by helicopter to a hospital in Chattanooga.
