The president of Duke University says the lacrosse coach was right to step down.
President Richard Brodhead says coach Mike Pressler's resignation was "highly appropriate."
The coach's resignation comes amid a growing scandal involving allegations that three lacrosse players raped a stripper at an off-campus party.
On Wednesday, Duke canceled the rest of the lacrosse season.
One student has been suspended from school, for apparently sending an e-mail saying he wanted to invite more strippers to his dorm room, kill them and skin them.
The rape allegations have roiled the campus and the city, raising racial tensions.
The stripper is African American.
She says her attackers were Caucasian.
Investigators have said the athletes are sticking together and keeping silent.
No one has been charged but the district attorney has said he is "pretty confident" that there had been a rape.
