Recall: Chocolate Bars

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Wednesday urged individuals, who may have purchased “Dagoba Organic Chocolate, ECLIPSE 87%, LOS RIOS 68%, and PRIMA MATERA 100% Dark Chocolate,” products at Whole Foods, Wild Oats, natural food specialty retailers and cooperatives, to check their containers for specific code information.

These chocolates, sold individually and in bulk form, may contain high levels of lead.

Patti Klocker, assistant director for the Department of Public Health and Environment’s Consumer Protection Division, said, “It is extremely important that any consumer, who purchased Dagoba Organic Chocolate, check the packages for the lot code and distribution date code.

Lead is highly toxic to humans, especially to young children.

Nearly half a million children living in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to cause irreversible damage to their health.

“Consumers, who have this variety of Dagoba Organic Chocolate, should discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.”

Food safety specialists with the Department of Public Health and Environment recently learned that the recalled product was provided to Whole Foods; Wild Oats; natural food specialty retailers; and food cooperatives in Colorado.

Information regarding other specific retail locations is not available as the product was provided to Rainbow Natural Food Distributors and Wild Rose Marketing and then further distributed to retail locations.

The nationwide recall issued on Friday, March 31, affects approximately 40,000 pounds of the Dagoba Organic Chocolate.

The product was manufactured by the firm and distributed between November 22, 2005 and March 24, 2006, and would have been available from shortly after that time until March 31, when the recall was initiated.
