4H Club Still Concerned About Future

The El Paso County Fair opened its doors this weekend. About 700 kids are showing their animals over the next week as part of the 4H program, but they're worried it could be for the last time.

That’s because thousands of dollars were cut from the program. El Paso County Commissioners were trying to make up for this year's $9 million shortfall.

“We were nervous this year. The kids already had their animals. I didn't want the kids not to come to the fair and possibly even miss the state fair," said Suzan Link with El Paso County Fair.

Because of donations, the kids were able to compete afterall.

11-year-old Monica West has been taking care of Goldilocks since it was a chick. She said she can't imagine if 4H didn't survive. "It wouldn't be cool. I would be staying at home right now instead of being here," she said.

El Paso County commissioners are balancing 2009 budget. They're still deciding what programs will be cut.

V. I really don't think a lot of people care about the young people and what they accomplish throughout the year getting ready to show their hard work. And, I'm sure they probably don't know just how much time goes into preparing for the County Fair. Little do they know, 4-H teaches our future generation about responsibility and pride. Who knows....these hard working kids will grow up, start a ranch or farm and feed the very people that want to do away with 4-H and the County Fair. If there were more programs like this for the younger generation to get involved in, maybe there would more responsible kids. People that don't understand need to go to the County Fair and see the hard work they do and then look at their faces during the judging. That in itself is worth the $7.00 admission. Who knows...you may even have some fun.

Bob, do you not realize what a big part 4-H and the fair plays in keeping children busy and teaching them responsibility!!! It would be a shame if the county fair/4-H was cut out alltogether. SAVE THE FAIR!!! I look forward to the fair every year and I pray that it will still be there when I have children old enough to participate.
