A Fort Carson soldier who sought refuge in Canada has been deported and is in a Colorado Spring's jail awaiting punishment from the military.

Twenty-five-year-old Robin Long was processed and booked into the El Paso County Jail Friday night, post spokesman Capt. Gregory Dorman said. Long was being held on a military confinement order.

Canada deported Long on Tuesday. Officials say he fled there in 2005 after he was told to report to his unit, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry, that had been deployed to Iraq.

Karen Linne, a spokeswoman for Fort Carson, said the soldier will be evaluated before the post decides on what action to take. Actions could include rehabilitation, discharge, return to service or punishment. The maximum punishment for desertion is death.
