Iraq's prime minister reportedly wants U.S. troops to leave Iraq "as soon as possible."

Nouri al-Maliki is quoted in a German magazine (Der Spiegel) as saying that he basically agrees with a withdrawal time line of 16 months, suggested by presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Al-Maliki says he isn't seeking to endorse Obama.

The Obama campaign's national security adviser says the Illinois Democrat welcomes al-Maliki's support. In a statement, Susan Rice says al-Maliki's position "presents an important opportunity to transition to Iraqi responsibility."

Obama is making his first visit to Afghanistan today, as part of a week long trip. He's also planning a stop in Iraq.
