Response to mike: You are so right about Nick Sculac. He is a crook and a scoundrel. He has stolen money from former volunteers with playing on their hopes and dreams. I have to agree with Sasha about Nick. Knowing his background personally, I believe that this was a publicity stunt to get more people to go out to the sanctuary. I love how they are always pushing pictures with the cubs, and now with Caracal cubs that have to be over 12 weeks of age. The cubs are too old regardless of size for pictures. Just a new way for Nick to line his pockets instead of caring for the cats at BCSS. [ Report Abuse ]

I think that the lion escaped from the sanctuary, but was caught and brought back shortly after the story broke. Nick, the owner, probably won't admit that though, in fear of being fined. That's probably why he's so "convinced" it's a dog. He wants everyone to believe that and to get off of his back. Also, about the tail....lions' tails are usually skinny or narrow, however, as anyone who has a cat knows, if he's spooked by something, his tail may fluff out. Could be what we are seeing in the picture...the lion spooked by Nick and gang coming after him. [ Report Abuse ]

I love animals and I know everyone has to be cautious but I hate the fact that there is always someone ready to shoot before they even know what is going on. Like I said I know it could be a scary situation and of course the animals are not house broken, I just wish there was another way instead of always ready to kill the animals first. [ Report Abuse ]

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOAX AND WISHFUL THINKING IS THAT A HOAX IS INTENTIONAL AS WHEN YOU PUT A TOY DINOSAUR IN A LAKE AND CALL IT NESSIE. WISHFUL THINKING IS WHEN YOU ACTUALLY SEE SOMETHING BUT YOUR MIND GOES TO THE MOST EXTREME EXPLANANTION FOR WHAT YOU SAW. WHEN A PERSON IS SCARED BY SOMETHING THE MIND REFUSES TO ACCEPT THAT THE FRIGHT STEMMED FROM ANYHTING LESS THAN THE MOST FRIGHTENINGTHING THAT COULD BE THE CAUSE. THEY SAW WHAT THEY SAW, THEY WERE STARTLED BECAUSE IT LOOKED ODD, AND IMAGINATION / WISHFULL THINKING TOOK HOLD AND THE REST IS (LAUGHINGLY) HISTORY. okay for the people who are having a cow about the lion. Calm down. seriously! I live close to where the "lion" was spotted..yeah it sucks that it could have been one. Not very likely though. But still get over it. If it gets your cows, it gets your cows. And for the parents who are freaking out because of your children, that's why they said keep them inside. Honestly it's not that big of a deal. My uncle and I were out in that area this morning looking for the thing. Didn't see any tracks or anything. It was probably a hoax anyways. People really need to calm down and not overreact to such things. Overreaction causes more problems than needed. And to the poeple yelling at the poeple making jokes. Leave them alone! Seriously, let them be the way they are. You telling them to be serious doesn't make them stop, it just makes them go on. Really, it does. And it's over with so obviously they didn't find anything. I have kids and they were not aloud to play outside due to this scare. I will as will many be staying awake and keeping an eye out tonite, because I also own horses. I am not rich and I am sure no redneck, I am a person who lives day to day giving my children every childs dream. So your darn right I care if there is a lion scare,we have alot to lose out here. Today is a sad day for all Coloradin's. Many of you have made ignorant comments towards one another and obviously have very little idea what your talking about. Is it a lion? If I had to form an educated opinion based on evidence I would say it quite likely is. The paw print drawing as well as the profile in the photo suggests it's a large cat. If you pay attention to the few details you can see in the cell phone pic, like the forward sloped ears and slender raised tail, it's obviously not a dog. The stance and tail length are also similar to that of an african lion. Please feel free to form your own opinions, but don't make negative personal comments back and forth. It's just not how I feel we should treat our neighbors. Lion or not, the fear is real for many who live nearby. Here is a link to study. Everyone form their own opinion, but please do it repectfully. http://www.predatorconservation.com/lion.htm [ Report Abuse ]

I hope it's not a lion at all. I agree with the newscaster that it may be a large dog such as a Great Pyranees or Newfoundland dog. The picture is of such poor quality that whatever it is could definitely be mistaken for a lion. In any case, I hope it gets caught soon so the locals can rest easy. [ Report Abuse ]

I don't usually comment on things like this but couldn't resist this time. First of all, I think people are really being rude and ignorant. If you don't care about the story and think it is stupid, don't read it. If you care about it, being considerate. Were some of you never taught manners? It makes no difference where people live, country or city, and the comments I read are shocking to me. I don't understand why some people can't accept that there are different lifestyles for different people. Leave them alone! Perhaps this story opens the door for a new story. I am guessing that most errors are typographical. However, there are a lot of errors that can be attributed to lack of education. Tale v. tale, their v there, meen/mean...I could go on. It's sad to see that so many people do not have good english skills. [ Report Abuse ]

We have so many people moving to this area, from out of state, that dont know a burro from a deer during hunting season. How are they going to know a lion from a dog? Hopefully, if you all are going to live in a mtn or plains area in Colorado, you will study up on what kind of animals you are looking at. Not too sure I agree. Looks like that tail is flipped over - if it's as short as it looks, it's not a dog's tail either. The proportions are wrong for a chow/malamute type dog. I'd like to hear from the people who saw it though. Cell phone photos sure are frustratingly vague! [ Report Abuse ]

I'm not an expert on lions or dogs, but I do know that Chow's and Akita's are much, much smaller than a male lion and have curled tails which would be evident in the picture. So, it is not a Chow or an Akita. I would think it would be pretty clear to someone whether they were looking at a male lion or a large dog. Not many dog breeds that resemble lions are any where near the same size. Lion tails are straight with a small tuft of hair at the end, and they're long but not as long as their bodies, they're very similar to the one in the picture. I agree with some of the other entries. I believe it's a lion that escaped from the sanctuary and the guy just didn't want to get fined. If it hasn't been taken back yet, I'm sure it will be soon. I can't think of anywhere else it could have possibly come from. OH and if it is a lion, it doesn't matter if it's use to seeing people...it's still a lion and its insticts will take over once it gets hungry. [ Report Abuse ]

Some of us walking down the yellow brick road had a conversation with our friend the lion, it went something like this: Tin Woodsman: Not even a rhinoceros? Cowardly Lion: Imposerous! Dorothy: Supposing you met an elephant? Cowardly Lion: I'd wrap him up in cellophant. Dorothy: What about a hippopotamus? Cowardly Lion: I'd thrash him from top to bottomus. Scarecrow: What if it were a brontosaurus? Cowardly Lion: I'd show him who was king of the forest [ Report Abuse ]

The persons out looking for this lion are trying to save your lives idiots and the life of the lion that is scared and confused. My house is in some of the news shots if that gives you an idea of how close it is to us. The cops have it under control and I do not fear for my livestock because I have millions of people milling around here. The lion is not coming out anytime soon if it is a lion and not a big dog. I am glad the cops are taking care of the situation. But bob I have a three year old that plays in the front yard do you think because we live in the country his life is not as important. And I am not a hillbilly I am very well educated and have many friend including my neighbor and her two young kids that live across the street. I am just thankful for all the effort [ Report Abuse ]

Ok I may only be 15 years-old here, but it sounds to me that some of the people who are posting these comment are acting yonger than me! I live not to far from there myself. Now I don't know if its a dog or a lion, or someone just palying a joke, But whatever the hell it is you guys need to grow up & realize that there are little kids who walk to there friends houses,we do go on walks, people do have pet & livestock out here. Plus who ever said that the news people must be having a slow day, Shouldn't you be at work?(sorry for the people who do stay at home, but I'm pretty sure that most of you people do work)Now with saying that I don't care that I'm only 15, & I don't care if you don't listen to me, but if this is a lion THIS IS NOT A JOKE! Now I'm not trying to cry of these comments but serously you people need to grow up, & take this just a little more serously. [ Report Abuse ]

Well it is good to know that people are making fun of a potentially deadly situation. The fact of the matter is that this animal will not be killed if there is no need for it to be. They are equipped with a tranquilizer gun to sedate the animal. I'm sorry to say but human lives are more important than this amazing animal's life [ Report Abuse ]

Thats funny, "He could devestate livestock"? Isnt't that what the livestock is for, eating? The other thing, if you haven't been out to Peyton or Calhan, it sure looks like the Savannah's of Africa. He probably feels right at home, minus the barbwire fences. This is better then the Jerry Springer show: jokes, serious comments, joke, serious comments, more jokes. Two questions: 1. do the police tranqulize the lion or kill it. 2. Will some gun-ho cowboy find the lion first and be the hero and get his 10 minutes of fame on the new. You make the call. Leave it alone? Are you mad? This is a lion we are talking about...Colorado is far from his natural habitat. He could devastate livestock or hurt someone. This isn't about being an animal lover; it's about protecting ourselves and neighbors first and then the lion. They're not going to kill it if they don't have to. If I was out there trying to locate a large LION I would want some sort of protection against him as well. [ Report Abuse ]

Please. Now really, you don't have to be overly serious about it. I doubt that there really is an animal such as an African lion. I live out there too, and it doesn't worry me very much. If it's even a lion (and not a large dog), then just keep your pets inside. Don't get all defensive because people're making jokes, they don't really mean harm. Anyway, like I said, I think it'd be a big dog. I don't know where else it would come from, except a home keeping it illegally. [ Report Abuse ]

NONA IN VAIL. Instead of spending your time insulting Coloradans on our love of animals you should be spending your time learning to spell STUPID

You people need to relax, these are on here to discuss, not fight each other, give your opinion, not name calling. For goodness sakes Grow up. Look at yourselves fighting over something so small. Plus its a funny story I mean 'cmon.

I happen to know the woman who took the photo. She is a very respected member of our community and a respected business woman. If she thought it was a lion then I would say it needed to be checked out. I would trust her before I would trust the word of anyone at the Big Cat Sancuary. I'm disappointed that people in the city think we are just a bunch of hicks out here. SHAME ON YOU

Has anyone been able to view the second side-view image that Sharon Harding-Shaw took w/her cell phone? If so, then you would have clearly seen that it was a Great Pyrenees (dog)--dog's muzzle, ears, NO mane and long bushy tail. But the first photo was the one plastered all over the news because it looked more "lion-like" and made for a good story. Also, did anyone ever stop to think that the dog's owner--knowing that Big Cats of Serenity Springs is nearby--brought the dog in thinking that one of the big cats was loose? And that the dog was inside a house was the reason why it could not be found? I know that my friend's sister who lives in that area owns a Great Pyrenees that she allows to roam free on her property--I'm starting to think that it was her dog that Sharon took a picture of! I'm going to have to ask and see if her dog was out on her property!

It is a large dog. I mean really people does that look like a lion. First of all, the tail is too fluffy. And second of all it is too dark to be a lion.

I have looked up all the different dogs that people have mentioned and all of these dogs have lay down ears and muzzels that are more round and bear like, The picture of the animal has pointed ears and a longated muzzel. We have had bears and mountain lions out here, why does everyone not want to admit that it could be a lion. They gave the approximate size of the paw print and I don't know of any paws that size on dogs, I had a Saint Bernard that was over 200lbs and his paws didn't even come close. Plus there is so much open area bewteen properties out here, there could be a private owner of a lion and no one would know until it is out and I don't think they would come forward and claim it.

I have been reading some of the comments and I cannot believe what is being said,we live about 1/8 mile from the sighting and we are not a bunch of mindless mexicans all living in one house, we are homeowners, we pay taxes and live out here to avoid people like you.If this animal is still out here, what are you going to say if it maims a person or kills livestock. We should be thankful that DOW and the Sheriff take these things seriously and care about our safety. I agree with all the bad comments about Nick, I have first hand knowledge of his bad ways, if Karen knew what he was up to, she would turn over in her grave..its a shame she is still not here..Why not make Rescues, micro chip these dangerous animals, at least you would be able to track them before something happens and it is to late. C.O. you hit the nail on the head, I couldn't have said it better. Also don't bad mouth rural life, at least we can afford where we live and not speed back and forth so we can pay for it.

Perhaps you should google images of a adult male lion. It looks nothing like the picture. It clearly looks like a dog. You people need to get out more.
