Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta was in Pueblo on Thursday to witness the culmination of seven years of hard work.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has spent more than ten million dollars creating a new safety device for commuter trains intended to absorb the impact of a collision.
The test was conducted at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo and went off without a hitch.
In 2002 the same test was performed using the old system and both the commuter train and the locamotive it collided with, derailed.
In this test, the new 'crumple zone' absorbed the impact, keeping the train on the track and hopefully making it possible for any future passengers to walk away unharmed.
