Tracie Preston, a 36-year old mother of two, faces a charge of child abuse resulting in death. Her eight month old daughter died sometime between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, according to court documents.
The following account comes from the Probable Cause Affidavit, a document put together by police to make an arrest.
It said Preston told police she was holding the baby Tuesday afternoon, when her 2 1/2-year old daughter started to cry. She said she threw down the baby, stomach first, towards the floor, but the child's forehead hit the bed frame, and she went unconscious.
After a few minutes, Preston said, the baby regained consciousness, and looked to be very dazed, but didn't cry. Preston said she put the baby in her crib, and when she checked on her at three in the morning, the baby was dead. She said she was scared, and didn't know what to do.
She placed her in the car seat later that morning, and drove around to different locations, before picking up her cousin. The cousin called police.
Sgt. Sal Fiorillo with Colorado Springs Police Major Crimes Unit said, "It's an unusual situation. We don't run across this very often."
Preston is in the Criminal Justice Center on $25,000 bond.
