A new state study shows about one-fourth of Colorado's teachers are transferring from low-performing schools to those with higher ratings, hurting the children who need the most help.
The Alliance for Quality Teaching study says the percentage is slightly higher than the 20 percent of teachers who leave schools rated excellent by the state Department of Education. The study was based on Department of Education figures from 2001.
Lawmakers on the Joint Education Committee say they will look at several initiatives to recruit teachers, including a program in Denver that used $3.8 million to provide bonuses to attract and retain teachers in hard-to-staff areas like math.
