A Pueblo elementary school is under investigation for allegedly trapping an autistic student in a closet. Veronica Hijar claims she witnessed special education teachers at Highland Park Elementary School keeping her young son in a dark closet against his will last week. District 60 officials dispute Hijar's claim, saying her son was actually placed in a 6' by 8' conference room with a window under reasonable circumstances.
"He was climbing on things in the classroom, there was the fear he would injure himself," said District 60 official Sandy Gecewicz. "So he was moved to the conference room, supervised, so he would not injure himself."
District officials say they launched an external police investigation themselves to show they had nothing to hide. Gecewicz says the district is also conducting an internal investigation and will take appropriate measures with staff members if necessary.
