A report issued by the Forest Service blames the driver of the
van that rolled over and killed five firefighters traveling to the Hayman Fire last summer.
Parts of the report was published today by the Aspen Daily News.
The report found the driver, Megan Helm, was likely fatigued. During the 22 hour and 20 minute trip, she had a maximum four and a half hours of sleep. She had driven from LaGrande, Oregon, with one rest stop.
The August 18th report says equipment failures or malfunctions
in the properly equipped van were not factors.
Helm was sentenced Wednesday to 50 hours of community service
after pleading guilty to one count of careless driving in connection with the crash.
