24-Year-Old Killed In Skydiving Accident

A family is mourning the loss of a son, killed in a skydiving accident this weekend.

Jon Bullar was killed during a jump near Vandalia, Illinois. He was 24 years old and had just recently taken up skydiving. He'd made just under 10 jumps since starting out. On Saturday, Jon was on his third solo jump of the day when something went wrong.

His cousin, Chad Hansen, was there. "As I landed -I just heard the shudder of a chute that didn't sound like it was open. It just fluttering to the ground. I looked up and didn't see him."

The Fayette County Coroner says Jon's parachute deployed, but not in time to inflate. An investigation is underway and will look at the backup device that's supposed to release a chute in case the jumper gets disoriented or can't do it on their own.

The owner of Archway Skydiving Center says he can't comment on the investigation.

Since the fatal accident Saturday, Jon's friends and family have been gathering at the Maryland Heights home where Jon grew up. They pray often for the life lost, but also talk about the way it was lived. Between motorcross racing and his new passion, skydiving, Jon Bullar's family says the 24-year-old was a true thrill-seeker.

"As much as he loved adventure, he loved Christ - so he balanced life very well," says his uncle.

His cousin Chad, possibly the last person to see Jon alive that day says he holds some comfort from that day: "Me and Jon were talking about that on the way up there... just about our faith and everything. It's very comforting knowing where's he's at - without a doubt."
