The family of a Russian immigrant who died in Iraq while serving with the Army says the man was granted citizenship and promoted to sergeant after his death.
The Department of Defense has identified the soldier as 21-year-old Sergeant Dimitri Muscat, of Aurora.
He served with the First Battalion, Eighth Infantry Regiment, Third Brigade Combat Team, Fourth Infantry Division based at Fort Carson.
The D.O.D. says Muscat died in Balad, Iraq, on Friday of non-combat-related injuries sustained earlier that day in Samarra, Iraq.
His death remains under investigation.
Muscat was on his second tour of duty in Iraq as a tank gunner.
He immigrated to the United States from Russia with his parents and his 19-year-old sister.
