Death Penalty

An inmate who killed a corrections officer has been given the death penalty.

Prosecutors said Edward Montour Junior killed 23-year-old Sergeant Eric Autobee in order to raise his stature in prison.

Authorities also say he said he had wanted to force authorities to
transfer him to another prison.

The sentence was announced today by Douglas County District
Judge Paul King.

Authorities say Montour struck Autobee twice on the head with a
nine-pound, four-foot-long soup ladle in the kitchen of the Limon
Correctional Facility in October.

The 35-year-old Montour already was serving a life sentence with
no chance of parole for the 1997 beating death of his 11-week-old
daughter in Colorado Springs.
