Three US senators are asking the Pentagon inspector general to investigate charges that the US Air Force Academy hasn't responded properly to allegations that female cadets were raped.

Colorado Republican Wayne Allard is one of those calling for the independent investigation. He says the number of female cadets
who've complained has increased from 12 to 18.

The women claim they were punished for reporting they had been
sexually assaulted. Air Force officials have said they take sexual
assault reports seriously.

Air Force Secretary James Roche has formed a task force to investigate the allegations. He will be in Colorado Springs on Wednesday. He was scheduled to speak at a symposium -- but will also
speak to academy cadets and staff about the sexual assault reports.
