Movie-goers frustrated with on-screen advertising before the start of films have filed lawsuits against two theater chains.
The suits claim the practice of showing commercials before the
start of movies defrauds the public. That's because the on-screen
commercials delay the start of movies beyond the posted times.
The class-action lawsuits name Classic Cinemas and Loews
Cineplex Entertainment. Both suits ask that theaters announce
films' actual start times in their ads, or pay up to 75-dollars
each to millions of movie-goers.
Denver-based CineMedia Corporation sells ads placed in Regal
Entertainment theaters nationwide. A spokesman says such ads
provide better programming than static slide advertising typically
shown before films.
Neither CineMedia nor Regal is named in the suits.
