Sporting Goods Merger

A major merger is about to create the largest sporting goods retailer in the country.

Denver-based Gart Sports and The Sports Authority of Fort Lauderdale, Florida announced the deal early this morning.

The boards of directors of both companies have already unanimously approved the deal.

The combined company will be called The Sports Authority with
headquarters in Englewood. It would have 385 stores in 45 states
nationwide.

The merger is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2003.
